Las Americas: north, central, Caribbean, and South America; these communities are similar to the united nations. Defining a diverse nation is complex because of the different dialects, geographics, and cultural traditions. Throughout las Americas history, politically aligned parties, especially in the United States, have attempted to find the proper term to describe the community; they have failed because it lacks geographical elements to build a communal bridge. Additionally, the trending word, ’Latinx’ is harmful to our community because it promotes division; and confusion. If uniting the community from a geographical point of view was at the heart of many, we’d all be celebrating instead of bickering about ‘Latinx’.
If silencing our community at large is an attempt to accept this term, we are at a disservice. Or anyway, it hasn’t prevented the minority from modifying the language to prove their gender arguments.
The ‘minority’ defending ‘Latinx’ stems from a survey by Pew Research Center in December 2019 that shows only 3% of the community use the term.
The term is temporary movement. Hey! The politicians will continue to create trending waves to increase their votes. Giancarlo Sopo is an online contributor to USA Today. He expressed the following in his article called, Progressives, Hispanics are not ‘Latinx.’ Stop trying to Anglicize our Spanish language: “One of the most notable examples of corporate America and politicians changing how they speak to ingratiate themselves with minorities is the growing use of “Latinx” as a descriptor for Latinos.” The political psychological propaganda makes it impossible to have a logical dialogue based on the romance language structure. Behind the propaganda lies the real purpose to keep our community divided and confused.
It’s depressing to burden a community that already struggles with identity issues with ‘Latinx’. The community first needs to tackle the root-level issues of identity and ancestral healing. How can a confusing term like ‘Latinx’ unite the nation? It’s impossible! First, the term is not rooted in the fundamentals of the Spanish language. Second, how can we force a term which can impact our community psychologically? Are creating trends the new way to dismiss critical thinking? ‘Latinx’ seems to answer the question. In the media and propaganda realm, the tone of the message seems to promote confusion. “‘Latinx’” has emerged within a larger push in Latin America to make Spanish and other romance languages gender-neutral.” A “larger push in Latin America”, the majority of the population haven’t even heard the term. And since when 3% has become the majority?
The ambiguous data collected by Google trends indicate no root-based reason why this term was created. And it’s started to gain memento among English-speakers because in Latin America the term is not popular. When our community is going to stop Journalists identify us. Instead, we need to unite to create rooted voices to represent our culture across the mainstream. Latams are perfectly capable of digging into their cultural roots to define their identity-they just need guidance and healing.
But the gender lamentations are so distracting. The mournings are ineffective bandaids in an attempt to heal deeper cultural roots. Our nation’s healing stems from bigger problems than fabricated social terms. If we want to witness a neutral change in the future, we need to promote unity instead of confusion.
It’s a natural reaction to blame our lack of knowledge on the romance language. If we care about uniting our communities, Spanish is not the threat, instead, we should explore its dialects to bridge the gap. You feel violated by the language patriarchal application or lack of non-binary foundation; you wish you can uproot the language. The only thing missing is the “X” for our domestic pets.
